WTF Was She Thinking? The Week That Was In Bad Celebrity Style.

Any week that holds an awards show will almost always be a gem for questionable fashion. I could have easily created this week's list on the daring designs of the BET Awards but decided its already been done, so only grabbed a couple choice looks, which was a tough task in and of itself. The rest of the group had to then be zany enough to stand up to the craziness that was the BET red carpet. Hope you can agree!

Melody Thornton at the BET Awards in Los Angeles

Comment: Many may have seen this look already, simply for the sheer madness of it. At first glance, it seems downright indecent. At second glance, it becomes even worse. Anytime a nude lining is used to cover up, you should know you're headed for disaster, especially when you can't quite make out where the drugstore stocking fabric ends and her actual leg begins. It's like a figure skating ensemble from Oksana Bauil's heyday. And yet the only thing Thornton needed to complete what would otherwise have been a cute retro outfit is simple: a bottom piece. Trousers, jeans, another skirt even (one that would cover her bare behind maybe)—is that really too much to ask? Even her fellow Pussycat Dolls are blushing.

Shes Thinking: What, I'm used to dressing like a call girl!

57804514dimetls72200923216PM
Omarosa Manigault Stallworth at the BET Awards in Los Angeles

Comment: Not that this look was as daring or eyebrow raising as some of the other's (ahem, singer Cassie's half shaved head and cutouts) but it makes the cut just because its so darn wrong. On so many levels. Who does Omarosa think she's kidding with trying to sport a flouncy, blindingly pink frock with a sweet-as-pie smile? If you have singlehandedly built your selfmade fame on your vindictive, cutthroat behavior then why wouldn't you work that into your red carpet image? Love her or hate her she can so easily be fierce, but here just winds up looking like some caricature of someone nice, Cassie perhaps. The dress, the hair, the pose—everything is too pageant-y and awkward. If this is her idea of a revamped image for some kind of comeback, then sorry but we'll pass. Bitchiness works for her, and she should stick to what she knows.

Shes Thinking: See Donald? I can play Melania.

57828737dimetls722009101907PM
Actress Phillipine Leroy-Beaulieu at the 25th edition of 'La fete du cinema' in Paris

Comment: There needed to be something with a shock value to eclipse the BET red carpet and luckily I didn't have to look any farther than France—home of fashion movements like haute couture and avant garde, and yet somehow not age appropriate. We love Beaulieu's balls-iness to attempt what appears to be a paper dress that bears a likeness of some cross between Madonna and a silent film star. But call us prude Americans, its still a non non to be showcasing the girls in such a way when you're pushing fifty (though Madonna actually may not agree). Plus on her petite frame the dress just kinda wears her, lacking any sort of silhouette or flattering shape. But then again, they play by their own rules—C'est Paris.

She's Thinking: J'adore my double-sided tape!

16860654dimetls72200930923PM
Rosanna Arquette at the launch of 'Playground' in New York

Comment: Have we missed something, or has Rosanna Arquette gone crazy? Gone is the day of her edgy, perforated punk style from 'Pulp Fiction'. And though she has been low on the radar for quite sometime, one would think her seldom public appearances would be reason enough to step it up. She's still a young, vibrant beautiful woman who has seemingly suffered the throes of obscurity for far too long. The trench coat and the sneakers channel disturbing images of Kevin Smith, and her little slash of skin above the belt makes it difficult not to stare. Oh Rosanna, you have a fabulous Hollywood family! Please ask them for help before you become the latest pioneer of homeless chic.

She's Thinking: Alexis is gonna kill me for this.

57813740dimetls72200924820PM
Sophia Hyatt at the premiere of 'Public Enemies' in London

Comment: OK so at first I thought, horror of all horrors, the fully exposed bra trend has actually worked it's way up the ranks from the street to the red carpet in some sort of bizarre role reversal of style. Yes Sophia has a great body, yes she looks great in fiery red, no it's not OK to have a bra become one of your accessories. Ever. And then I spotted a back shot of the dress and realized the bra was actually attached as part of the dress! Redemptive? I don't think so. Unless she's the entertainment for a hookah bar later that evening, she is still very much at fault; that is, until I came across other event shots and realized that, for her, this is actually pretty covered up.

She's Thinking: I'm officially the British answer to Kim Kardashian

Summer Trends. Dream Vacation Without the Passport.

Fashion_ethnic_prints

The arrival of July means summer is officially in full swing. The holidays, the long weekends, and finally being able to take some time off are all definitive parts of this most treasured of months. Now is the time for daydreams of exotic locales; of breathtaking cliffsides, crystal clear waters, and vibrant colors of a faraway landscape. But if the past year hasn't been too kind to your wallet and you were unable to stow away travel funds as easily as vacation days, then fear not—many designers are using this season to evoke the energy of various cultures. The pieces that have come out of this global design trend are as breathtaking and intricate as the places to which they pay homage.

No matter where you yearn to be, envelop yourself in every corner of the globe with ethnic pieces that illustrate Spanish, Indian, African, Native American, and Asian heritage. Bold colors, tribal graphics, and dramatic embellishments make each statement making piece unique to the culture it embodies. Many of the pieces this season, such as the beautifully patterned dresses, should be worn on their own and paired with minimal accessories for maximum effect. An ethnic-inspired accessory, such as a beaded bag or fringed heel, can pack an exotic punch to an otherwise neutral ensemble.

So if you're singing the travelers blues in the coming weeks, scoop up a few of these pieces for your own private getaway. Just because you may be planning a staycation this year, doesn't mean you can't spend every second of it feeling worldly and fabulous.

Beauty Beat. Protect Your Skin With the Best Sunscreen Ever...Anthelios 60

Anthelios_60 I hope we caught you before you left for the beach for the 4th, because we don't want you to forget about your skin as you are enjoying a few deserved days off.

I first heard about Anthelios by La Roche-Posay from a dermatologist last year. I never go anywhere without sunscreen on my face (rain or shine) anymore. When I asked her what the best sunscreen on the market was today she said unequivocally, "Anthelios at least 50, but the problem is...you can't get the SPF that high in the U.S." So I had my mother track down some for me during a trip to France last year, and have been using this product on my face for awhile.

That was then, this is now. As of this past May, Anthelios 60 (SPF 60) with Cell-OX Shield is available in the U.S. Considered the next-gen in suncare protection, this revolutionary product offers dual protection with a patented combination of two powerful sun filters and anti-oxidants to further protect your skin down to the cellular level.

Anthelios by La Roche-Posay has been trusted by dermatologists worldwide for over 15 years for its advanced formulations in UVA and UVB protection. Go ahead and ask your doctor, but you don't need a prescription. There are three different formulations available: Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Fluid (normal to combination), Anthelios 60 Melt-in Milk (face and body) and Anthelios 60 Melt-in Lotion (normal to dry). None of the products contains Mexoryl SX.

Anthelios 60 is now available at CVS and Duane Reade drugstores or online at larocheposay.us.

Now go ahead and enjoy your break!

Behind the Scenes with Leanne Marshall and Bluefly

Leanne_marshall_5

Last week, in one of the most fun sneak-peek events I've been to, I went behind the scenes at the photo shoot for Bluefly's exclusive collection from Project Runway's Season Three winner, Leanne Marshall. After the six long months necessary to design and produce the clothes—which she said was a lot of trial and error and learning from mistakes—Leanne fans can look forward to pieces in a style similar to those that made her famous, with  inspiration taken from flowers and petals, but in a different color palate and with a “refined approach... more wearable for every day.”

Leanne (who is absolutely lovely, by the way) was wearing a dress she designed for fall 2009, and she reports that the next collection is going to be a departure from what we saw on PR, something more glamorous and elegant than anything she's done before.

0610_0660c

“This is only the tip of the iceberg for me. I think there's so much more that I can do and that people are eventually going to see out of me. I'm capable of doing more than just petals. This is something I've been into lately but it hasn't always been what I've been about as a designer.

Check out our video here:

The collection will be available for purchase from Bluefly on July 8th.

New Survey Names Paris Most Stylish City, Proves the Importance of Global Fashion

Paris_at_night
Paris at night

The fashion industry is finally getting the recognition it deserves with a recent survey that helped formulate the 2009 Anholt-GfK Roper City Brands Index. Released on June 16, the survey asked 10,000 people from various countries to rank 50 cities on such varied subjects as climate, physical attractiveness, restaurants and nightlife. The top ten cities that emerged were similar in that they had all made significant contributions to the field of design, especially in fashion.

The top four stylish cities were hardly a surprise with Paris coming out on top as the historic nucleus of haute couture, art nouveau, and avant garde design. Milan came in second sensibly, being the global hub of luxury manufacturing. New York was third for leading the popular culture world with cutting edge and contemporary fashion, and London rounded out the top tier as fourth. Other cities that made the cut into the top ten included Los Angeles, Rome, San Francisco, Tokyo, and Barcelona—each with notable contributions unique to their geography and culture such as the Bay Area's standout industrial design firms and Barcelona's legendary architecture of Antoni Gaudi.

The underlying theme that the survey illustrated was that the fashion industry plays an integral role in forming the cultural character of a city. The four top cities on the list host the four most important fashion weeks in the world. The other six cities each host their own runway shows that showcase local talent not necessarily ready for a global presence. So now that its been proved on paper just how crucial of a role that fashion plays in the evolution of a city's identity, the only question that remains is— Where the heck is Chicago in all this?!!

New Sponsors Save Carmen Marc Volvo From September Show at Citrine

20090701_carmenmarcvalvo_250x375
Carmen Marc Volvo's model displays at New York nightclub Citrine

All designers, even high end ones, need to make sacrifices to adapt to the current financial climate. Some, however, are more unfortunate than others. Thus was the case for the house of Carmen Marc Volvo who had to make budget cuts, resulting in offsite runway shows last February's Fashion Week. After an offer allowing them to showcase their wares for free, the label ended up at downtown New York nightclub Citrine. Described by New York Magazine as "douchetastic", the downtown digs were hardly a prime spot for Carmen Marc Volvo's elegant designs in their opinion. Mind you, Second City Style was there and appreciated the drink and the break from the tents. So we are a little less critical and understand that some designers decided to forgo the spectacle of the tents to save some cash.

Now, with the September shows on the horizon, the label has been seemingly saved from another pro bono location. Two new event sponsors, World Gold Council and NASDAQ, have stepped up to help field some expenses for September's Fashion Week and have provided the Carmen Marc Volvo house with a neutral solution—the label will tape a runway show of his spring 2010 collection and show the video to about 300 people at a cocktail party in the NASDAQ building in Times Square. While its not exactly the tent in Bryant Park, its at least an upscale environment more befitting of the label's image. Plus the views will probably be great. The World Gold Council will also be providing the opportunity for the Marc Volvo house to broadcast runway show footage across various screens in Times Square. Who knows, this could even be the makings of a new Fashion Week trend.
